A new beginning: Iskut celebrates opening of Łuwechōn Kots’ede’i Kime School

On October 16, a joyful celebration took place in Iskut as community members, the Iskut Band Council, and partners gathered for the grand opening of Łuwechōn Kots’ede’i Kime — Łuwechōn House of Learning. The new school represents a major milestone for Iskut Band, providing a modern space where children can learn, grow, and stay connected to Tahltan culture and language.

A School Built by the Community

Located on Iskut IR #6, the new 1,463 m² building replaces the Klappan Independent School, originally built in 1978. Designed with input from students, educators, Elders, and families, the facility features five classrooms, cultural learning areas, a library, gym, playground, and outdoor classroom for traditional on-the-land learning.

A Partnership for the Future

The project was made possible through a partnership between Iskut Band and the Government of Canada, with more than $25 million in combined funding.

Voices from the Celebration

“With this new school, we aim to help our community move away from the trauma associated with attending the Indian Day School… We are hopeful that this new educational environment will provide healing and a fresh start for our students and community.” Chief Marie Quock, Iskut Band Council

“This school was built in partnership to ensure that future generations have access to their language, values and culture right at home.” The Honourable Mandy Gull-Masty, Minister of Indigenous Services

This exciting milestone marks a new chapter for the Iskut community — one filled with pride, learning, and connection to the land and culture.
